Troop 183 is a boy-led troop. This means that the actual Scouts
will run the meetings, lead campouts, and organize outings amongst
themselves with adult assistance. The core of the troop is
its leadership. The SPL, or Senior Patrol Leader, is the leader of
the boys, who vote him in. He has two ASPLs, or Assistant Senior
Patrol Leaders, to assist him. Below them are the PL's, or Patrol
Leaders. They will lead the boys with in their patrol. Each
patrol will generally have between six and ten boys. Some of
Scout's within the patrols have specialized positions. Two of the
more prominent of these include the Scribe, who does record keeping for
the troop, and the Quartermaster, who maintains troop equipment.
The troop
meets most Mondays at 7:00 p.m. Generally, if the Scouts have
school, the troop will meet, although there will be sporadic meetings
during the summer. There is normally one campout per month, along with a
High Adventure trip and a week at the Ransburg Scout Camp during the
summer. The troop travels to sites in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky,
and Michigan. The average travel time for most of these trips is about two hours. Besides meetings and
campouts, the troop will do service for our charter organization, the
city, and many other institutions.
Even though a Scout stays busy with his position, he must also
consider advancement. Each Scout goes through a series of ranks
from when he joins the troop to when he attains Eagle, the highest
rank. A boy must reach Eagle by his 18th birthday. Each
Scout's ranking is a direct reflection of his skills and leadership
within the troop. Scouts ranked Star or above along and adults in
the troop may sign off the requirements of younger Scouts. |
